A SHOW! For 13 years, Steel The Spotlight has been a launchpad for students, emerging performers, hosted at our stunning Kylie J Pole Geelong studio. 

 

A pole dance, burlesque, and performance competition, Steel celebrates the full experience of creating a show from concept to the stage - from choreography, skills, musicality, costume, and storytelling through to stage presence and all elements of performance — all in a warm, supportive studio environment.  At its heart Steel The Spotlight is a celebration of creativity, individuality, confidence, and community. Just an all round incredible experience!

 

This year, for the first time, we welcome students from Kylie J Pole Studios Geelong and Torquay, while also extending a limited number of spots to students from other regional studios who would love to be part of this exciting event. We cannot wait to welcome you all!

Categories

**Steel the Spotlight Category Criteria** Steel the Spotlight is a performance-based pole and dance competition celebrating creativity, stage presence, individuality and community. Please read the category criteria carefully and enter the section that best reflects your current training level and performance experience. **BEGINNER POLE** For beginner-level pole students. Routines may include beginner spins, transitions, floor-based movement and beginner-level pole skills. Floor-based inverts are permitted. No aerial inverts, aerial push-outs, shoulder mounts, handsprings or advanced aerial tricks. This section is for new performers and beginner students stepping onto the stage. **INTERMEDIATE POLE** For students training at an intermediate or advanced prep level, either at Kylie J Pole or another studio. Aerial inverts are permitted. No handsprings. Shoulder mounts are permitted from the floor only. This category is for students building strength, control and confidence in aerial skills within an intermediate-level framework. **ADVANCED POLE** For students training at Advanced 1 level or above, either at Kylie J Pole or another studio. This section is for advanced-level students who have not previously competed externally or placed in an external pole competition. Advanced tricks, combinations and aerial transitions are permitted. **ELITE POLE** For competitors who have previously competed externally, placed in an external competition, or are training at an elite/open level at any studio. This section is suited to experienced performers with a high level of strength, technique, stagecraft and experience. **BURLESQUE & SHOWGIRL** Open to burlesque performers, showgirl performers, commercial heels dancers and cabaret-style performers. Burlesque, showgirl, commercial heels, chair work, floor work, fan dancing, comedy, character work and theatrical performance. Pole is not permitted. Focus on performance, posture and technique, stage presence, character, musicality, storytelling, costuming, confidence and overall entertainment value. **DANCE & BASEWORK** A pole-based dance and basework category. Pole must be used, but pole tricks are not the focus. This section may include flow, old school, heels style, low flow, floorwork, acro, transitions, choreography and Roller Pole. Performers may choose their pole configuration and style. Judging will focus on dance quality, artistic wuality, basework technique, musicality, flow, performance, transitions, character and use of the pole. Pole tricks may be included if they support the choreography. Aerial tricks will not be judged. **OVERALL FOCUS** Steel the Spotlight is a stunning performance event, not a tricks competition. Competitors should aim to bring: Theme and concept Character and storytelling Stage presence Musicality Costume and styling Creativity Performance quality Expression and confidence X factor Clean transitions Safe execution of skills Overall entertainment value We encourage performers to think beyond the tricks and create a full stage piece with personality, intention and connection. Bring us a show. Bring us a moment, make us feel something. **GENERAL NOTES** Competitors should enter the category that best reflects their current level and experience. If you are unsure which category is right for you, please contact us before entering. The organiser reserves the right to move a competitor into a different category if their level or experience is better suited elsewhere. External entries are limited and will be accepted based on available spots.

Criteria

Criteria is everything! Please read this information before submitting your entry and when planning your show. Please reach out to us with any questions. BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED & ELITE POLE Steel the Spotlight is a performance-based competition. Competitors will be judged not only on tricks, but on their ability to create a full stage piece with confidence, creativity, musicality and connection. TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY /20 **Difficulty of Pole Skills /10** Appropriate difficulty for the performer’s chosen category. Judges will consider strength, flexibility, control, dynamic elements, combinations and the overall level of pole content. **Technique & Execution /10** Clean and controlled execution of skills. Judges will consider body lines, control, safe technique, pointed toes, extension, grip changes, exits, strength, stability and overall cleanliness. DANCE MOVEMENT /15 **Floor work /5** Quality, control and creativity of floor-based movement. Judges will consider flow, extension, lines, intention and how well the floorwork supports the routine. **Transitions /5** Smoothness and creativity of transitions in and between tricks, dance sections and floorwork. Judges will consider flow, control, connection and how seamlessly the routine moves from one moment to the next. **Musicality /5** Connection to the music. Judges will consider timing, rhythm, accents, pauses, dynamics and how well the performer uses the music to shape the routine. STAGE PRESENCE & PERFORMANCE /10 Confidence, facials, engagement and connection with the audience. Judges will consider character, expression, energy, eye contact, performance quality and the performer’s ability to hold the stage. COSTUME & PRESENTATION /5 Costume, hair, makeup and overall styling. Judges will consider how well the costume suits the routine, theme, character and music, as well as the overall polish of the performer’s presentation. OVERALL PERFORMANCE /10 The overall impact of the routine. Judges will consider x-factor, entertainment value, creativity, concept, storytelling, stagecraft and whether the performer created a memorable show. **SCORE TOTAL /60** BURLESQUE & SHOWGIRL Steel the Spotlight is a performance-based competition. In this category, competitors will be judged on dance quality, character, theme, musicality, stage presence and overall entertainment value. DANCE MOVEMENT & CHARACTERISATION /20 **Dance Movement Technique /10** Quality and execution of dance movement, transitions and use of space. Judges will consider control, lines, flow, clarity of movement, floorwork, choreography, spacing and how well the performer uses the stage. **Characterisation & Theme /10** Creativity, originality and commitment to a strong theme, story or character. Judges will consider storytelling, character development, intention, expression and how clearly the performer brings their concept to life. THEME & COSTUME /10 Strength of theme, costume and overall visual presentation. Judges will consider how well the costume supports the story, character, music and overall show, including hair, makeup, styling, props and polish. MUSICALITY /10 Connection to the music. Judges will consider timing, rhythm, accents, pauses, dynamics, musical interpretation and how well the performer uses the music to shape the routine. STAGE PRESENCE & PERFORMANCE /10 Confidence, facials, engagement and connection with the audience. Judges will consider energy, expression, eye contact, charisma, character commitment and the performer’s ability to hold the stage. OVERALL PERFORMANCE /10 The overall impact of the routine. Judges will consider x-factor, entertainment value, creativity, concept, storytelling, confidence, stagecraft and whether the performer created a memorable show. **SCORE TOTAL /60** POLE DANCE & BASEWORK Steel the Spotlight is a performance-based competition. In this category, performers will be judged on dance quality, basework, musicality, flow, stage presence and how well they represent their chosen style. Pole must be used at some point in the routine, but pole tricks are not the main focus of judging. Tricks may be included if they support the choreography, but this category is about dance, movement, transitions, musicality and performance. DANCE CREATIVITY & TECHNIQUE /20 **Dance Movement & Creativity /10** Quality, creativity and flow of dance movement, transitions, floorwork, basework and use of space. Judges will consider how well the performer moves around the pole, uses the floor, transitions between movements and creates a routine with originality, intention and flow. **Technique & Execution /10** Clean and controlled execution of dance, basework, floorwork and pole-based movement. Judges will consider lines, control, strength, extension, balance, smooth transitions, safe execution and overall cleanliness of movement. Performers will also be judged on how well they stay true to the style they are presenting, whether that is heels, old school, low flow, lyrical, contemporary, Roller Pole, commercial, sensual flow or another pole-based dance style. MUSICALITY /10 Connection to the music. Judges will consider timing, rhythm, accents, pauses, dynamics, musical interpretation and how well the performer uses the music to shape the routine. COSTUME & PRESENTATION /10 Costume, hair, makeup and overall styling. Judges will consider how well the costume suits the routine, theme, music and chosen style, as well as the overall polish and presentation of the performer. STAGE PRESENCE & PERFORMANCE /10 Confidence, facials, engagement and connection with the audience. Judges will consider expression, energy, eye contact, character, confidence, performance quality and the performer’s ability to hold the stage. OVERALL PERFORMANCE /10 The overall impact of the routine. Judges will consider x-factor, entertainment value, creativity, concept, flow, style, stagecraft and whether the performer created a memorable show. **SCORE TOTAL /60**

Please read our general rules for all categories. COMPETITOR RULES 1. All competitors must be a minimum of 16 years of age or over. 2. Steel the Spotlight 2026 is open to Kylie J Pole students and a limited number of external competitors from regional studios and surrounding areas. 3. External competitors are welcome to apply, however places are limited and will be accepted based on available spots in each category. 4. Competitors must enter the category that best reflects their current training level, performance experience and competition background. 5. The organiser reserves the right to move a competitor into a different category if their level, experience or routine content is better suited elsewhere. 6. Competitors may enter more than one division. A separate application must be submitted for each division/routine. 7. The competition divisions are: Beginner Pole Intermediate Pole Advanced Pole Elite Pole Pole Dance & Basework Burlesque & Showgirl 8. The poles used in competition will be stainless steel 45mm poles. 9. All pole routines should include both pole skills and performance elements. Steel the Spotlight is a performance-based competition, not a tricks-only competition. 10. Pole Dance & Base work routines must use the pole at some point in the routine, however pole tricks are not the main focus of judging. Tricks may be included if they support the choreography. 11. Burlesque & Showgirl routines do not require pole unless the performer chooses to include it. 12. Music submissions must not exceed 3 minutes in length. Any music exceeding this limit will require editing and resubmission. 13. Costumes must be appropriate for the routine being presented. 14. Hot pants, bikini-style bottoms and performance wear are permitted. Full nudity not permitted. 15. Burlesque and Showgirl performers may use pasties, however this must be approved by the organiser or allocated event representative prior to the event. 16. Props may be used. All intended props must be approved by Kylie J Pole staff and included on the competitor performance form by the due date. 17. Human props allowed however must ticket paying audience members and approved by the organiser. 18. Competitors must conduct themselves in an appropriate and respectful manner at all times while involved in the competition. 19. Good sportsmanship and support for other competitors must be shown at all times. Anyone found making negative, offensive or inappropriate comments or gestures towards other competitors, judges, staff or audience members may be disqualified. 20. Competitors must allow Kylie J Pole Studio and their representatives to take and use photographs or video footage for the purpose of publicity, promotion and event documentation. 21. Competitors must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at any time during the competition. 22. Competitors will be required to submit their chosen music as an MP3 file by the due date provided. 23. Competitor bio and performance information, including theme, costume, props, grip requirements and any other relevant details, must be submitted via the official competitor form by the due date provided. 24. Competitors must sign a disclaimer before performing. 25. There is an application fee per routine. This fee must be paid at the time of entry. Once received, the detailed application form will be sent to the competitor. 26. Submitting an application is a commitment to perform. Withdrawals after the final withdrawal date may incur an administration fee to cover the time and costs involved in adjusting the event. 27. If illness or injury is the cause of withdrawal, a doctor’s certificate may be requested. Acceptance of withdrawal remains at the organiser’s discretion. 28. Competitors must comply with the competition rules and regulations at all times. A competitor may be disqualified if they break any of these rules.
